Hindi Medium

Parents with enough money to improve their local school, instead take away a slot from a needy child at the "good" school.

Just about too real to be enjoyable.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania

As the movie opens, our heroine is bucking hard against her community's expected gender norms.

She is so completely successful that by the end of the film, her love interest is displaying visible chest-shaving bumps and ab-accentuating makeup.

Running Shaadi

The blurring and muting of every occurrence of "dot-com" within the movie plucked me out of the story every time it happened--by the end, it was the only thing I wanted to know about the making of this film.

They left this wide open for a sequel, but I'm not sure we have to worry too much about that.

Dangal

Probably one of the most exciting sports movies I've ever seen.

And that includes both "Karate Kid" movies (not Rocky, or The Mighty Ducks, though--I've never seen those).

Pink

Nothing like the preview that made me think Bachchan was playing a masked killer, this movie begins somewhere in the middle, then dips in & out of confusion as it slowly fills in the gaps.

Bachchan's courtroom speeches would surely anger the parents of some college rapists.

Freaky Ali

Starts out laugh-out-loud funny, and rarely changes its tone.

Sure, the ending is abrupt & nuts, and there are loose ends, but we've got a fine underpants-to-riches story here.

A Flying Jatt

It's true: on the basis of its special effects--using the same technology as your local TV weather report--this movie can't compete with Marvel Studios.

As far as sheer FUN, though--and song & dance number Cap & Thor had best never attempt--this is the winning super hero film.

Sarbjit

This is one tearjerker that layers misery, on top of misery, on top of misery.

Seriously: they got the dancing out of the way quite early in the movie, and then it was as if it had never happened--and certainly never would, ever, ever again.

Fan

The movie has some pretty exciting chase segments, the best of them being the first, which is entirely vertical.

Other than that, CGI, heavy makeup, and SRK's purposeful overbite do much of the heavy lifting here.

Laal Rang

Well, they do talk about "Dracula" and "Batman" an awful lot, but even with blood flying all over the place, it's just not all that exciting.

To be honest, I just saw this one so I could avoid "Fan."

Kapoor & Sons (Since 1921)

Sure, a hot lead goes a long way, but even that can't distract from some things.

Things like Rishi Kapoor's wretchedly-thick pancake makeup.

Ki & Ka

This movie is so unrealistic.

No woman would let her husband turn their home into a toy train station that looks like a steroid version of the one on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

Jai GangaaJal

Sure, she's gorgeous, but Abha Mathur is no-nonsense: she is tougher than any man under her command (or above her rank); she doesn't engage in singing & dancing; she isn't mooning over any man; and she does not--even once--stand in front of any damned wind machine.

Such a role is rare even here in the U.S., and I'm sure Priyanka Chopra's leading tough-guy madam-sir role owes a lot to her success as a TV star in Quantico.

Wazir

I was going to call this movie's genre "revenge porn," but I am told by the Wiki page that what I should say is "crime thriller."

As such, there are many of the expected stunts and FX, but the one special effect that had me absolutely staring the whole time was Amitabh Bachchan's hairline.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2

There was a 12-minute rant about 3/4 of the way through the film that I enjoyed.

Yeah, that was the good part of the movie.

Singh is Bliing

Okay, as usual, I put no research into the movie I saw, just blindly (and I think reasonably) assuming it was a sequel to the 2008 movie which I also saw, "Singh is Kinng."

I'm going to say the "bliing" was the slapstick, which was great & all over the place, and for the next non-sequel let's-take-advantage title, perhaps I'll suggest "Singh is Ka-ching."

Bajrangi Bhaijaan

A mute Pakistani girl is lost & alone & India--wouldn't it be refreshing if she were still at least one of these things by film's end?
Bollywood just doesn't work that way, but the ride is a fun one, even with a song containing the oft-repeated line, "let's take a selfie."

Happy New Year

What we have here is Ocean's 11 meets Mission Impossible, a heist film with a dash of Looney Tunes, a tripped-up spill of muscle worship, and another ton yet of Matrix-style cinematography.

It's amazing, actually, that they still had enough money in the budget for the fans needed to keep the heroine's 'do constantly aloft.
