Kiki's Delivery Service

A Hayao Miyazaki film is always a beautiful thing to watch (or rewatch) on the big screen.

It's a good thing I knew what I was in for, though, or I might have walked out during the super-crappy "GKIDS Mini-Fest" animated shorts that played out before the film.

Spirited Away: 15th Anniversary

The movie is a masterpiece, of course, and breathtaking when viewed on the large screen.

The "Ghiblies" short features, though, are mostly a waste of time, pretty much just animators fooling around & letting off some steam--but I can't help but think if Disney/Pixar were to allow their staff such leeway, their more recent work would be a whole lot more creative & breathtaking.

The Wind Rises

Starts out on such a whimsical, fantasy-rich level, of course I was disappointed as I realized the whole thing could not end well.

While I respect the artist's annual assertions of having just made his last film, I do hope that when he does finally bow out, it's on a note so cute as to make Hello Kitty's teeth hurt.

The Secret World of Arrietty

Wait, did I just see a family-friendly movie that had NO FART HUMOR?

What it did have was plenty of suspense, whimsy and action, and I can’t wait for the next movie from Studios Ghibli.
