OSCAR NOMINATED SHORT FILMS 2015: ANIMATED

This year's selections were the best they've been in some time; I think my favorite is Me and My Moulton.

Sadly, though, the award may well go to the very pretty but completely uninspired & unoriginal Disney entry, Feast.

Oscar Nominated Short Films 2014: Animation

2014oscarshorts

A bunch of sh!t, and also a Mickey Mouse cartoon.

Actually, I liked two of them--three, if you count the ostrich & giraffe "hosts" (they would be my second-favorite).

The Oscar-Nominated Short Films 2012: Animation

I was eager to see whether there was a film more amazing and award-worthy than "Paperman."

There really wasn't.

The Oscar-Nominated Short Films 2012: Animation

Some years, I can’t decide which feature I love the most, and which is the most worthy of the Academy Award.

This year, what I can’t figure out why the category even exists if this is the best they’ve got.

Rio

It opens & closes like Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room.

Inbetween, there's a laugh here & there, but not much else of value.

The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2011: Animated

All five nominated 'toons in one place--plus severable honorable mentions--and of course, the only one most of us have seen is the one from Pixar.

Each one is interesting in its own way; I found the mod-retro style of "Let's Pollute" to be very funny.

Gnomeo and Juliet

The first minute or so shows a lot of promise, and I'm really impressed with the textures & even much of the human animation.

In the end, though, the movie is merely "cute" rather than "awesome" or even "good," and the crappy forty-year-old Elton John music totally ruins it for me.

Despicable Me

The little girl seems so much like the one from "Monsters, Inc.," the minions remind me of the "Toy Story" aliens, and the "other" bad guy brought to mind the Edith Head character from "The Incredibles."

Whatever-- the movie made me laugh, a lot.

Day & Night

This Pixar short, paired with Toy Story 3, is stunning in its inventiveness.

I can't wait to see it again.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

It's raining Spam©--Hallelujah!

Amen for a non-Pixar, non-Dreamworks animated flick that kicks tail & then some--if this kind of beautiful animation & sharp writing is going to be typical of Sony Pictures Imageworks, I'll be eager to see what's next.

Ponyo

The most fun & cute (I am meaning this in a good way) Miyazaki film in years, I loved every minute of this and will watch it again.

The only problem I had with Disney's otherwise-excellent dub of Ponyo is the use of Betty White, whose voice is so instantly-recognizable that it effectively distracts the viewer from the film's action.
